This is Digit. She used to be a breeder dog, as in a puppy mill had her and used her to have litter after litter of puppies. She’s four years old, and the mill was going to put her down. A lady named Hilda who rescues dogs found out about her and was looking for a home for her.

Elton and I were looking for a dog. We go to know Hilda through a long string of people. Our neighbour knew another lady who was looking for fosterers for two other puppies. We had gone to meet that lady and the puppies, but it didn’t work out. That’s when Hilda asked if we would be interested in an ex-breeder dog who’s a West Highland Terrier.

We met her. We loved her. We asked to foster her the next day. Today is the first day Digit has been with us, and other than two accidents, she’s been awesome. She learned to heel on a leash within minutes of our first walk. She learned to pee on newspaper, and then on a pee tray because we keep changing our damn minds. She is still learning to sit, but man, does she love treats. She also has this tendency to rear up and balance on her hind legs when she’s excited.

We asked Andrea, a groomer, to come in and give her a makeover, and Digit went through the session like a model dog. She wasn’t very keen on the shower head, but otherwise she bore everything else with amazing patience, even nail clipping and the trimming of the fur between her paw pads. Thanks to Andrea, we managed to get Digit to her pee tray in time for her first number two in our house.

Even though I’ve had to clean up her poop twice today, I’ve never felt more happy and content. And I never once felt impatient or upset. All I do feel is slightly annoyed that I have to go to work tomorrow and can’t spend time with her.
